Applesauce Cake/Butter Frosting Recipe

2 3/4 c Sifted cake flour; * see not

2 c Sugar

1/4 ts Baking powder

1 1/2 ts Soda

1 1/2 ts Salt

3/4 ts Cinnamon

1/2 ts Cloves

1/2 ts Allspice

1/2 c Soft shortening

1/2 c Water

1/2 c Walnuts; chopped

1 1/2 c Applesauce

1 Very large egg

White butter frosting: 3 c Confectioners sugar; sifted

1/3 c Shortening

About 3 t. milk 1 1/2 ts Vanilla

* or 2 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour. Grease and flour 13x9 inch pan. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. Add shortening, water, and nuts. Beat 2 minutes, and add applesauce and egg. Beat 2 more minutes. Pour into prepared pan. Bake in 350 oven for 45 to 50 minutes. Frost with White Butter Frosting when cool. Frosting: Mix all ingredients together until smooth. -----
